Notes |
- A meat salesman, William migrated to Australia ,and his wife and all surviving children arrived in Sydney ,via Victoria, in November 1886 aboard the Duke of Devonshire.( Their fourth child Andrew Clydesdale had died in 1881 at about 12 months of age).Williams name does not appear on the passenger manifest of the voyage,so he may have travelled out at an earlier date ,or travelled as a crew member on the Duke of Devonshire,to offset costs.
He secured a house in Rickety Street, Mascot (a Sydney suburb), later moving to Lemon Grove near Penrith NSW. Note: Lemongrove was first settled in 1827, when it was occupied by John and Sarah MacHenry who erected a residence called "Lemon Grove House". There is evidence that suggests that part of the land was used as a lemon orchard during this period, hence the name Lemongrove.
Years later Lemon Grove House was demolished and the land subdivided into a total of 249 lots which were offered for sale on 24th January, 1885. William appears on the 1902 Electoral role, for the Penrith Parramatta electorate ,with his son James and daughter Marghretta. His occupation is listed as Engine Fitter with the Railways at Penrith on a wage of 10 Shillings and four pence a day.All his children were taught to play a musical instrument, Alexander being the foremost as he could play the piano, violin and a number of wind instruments, including the flute. Alexanders wife Iris was a fine pianiste.Perritt Place, located in South Penrith,is likely named in honour of Williams contribution to his fellow citizens.William Perritt became a leading citizen becoming conductor of the Penrith Philharmonic Orchestra and probably of the Municipal Band. He also served as a councillor on the Penrith Municipal Council from 1900 to 1907.He declined re-election in 1905 and did not serve on council this year due to illness.
