    • The link between John and Jane Kirkpatrick and those listed here as their children ,is unproven ,however ,after studying the family chart held by The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland(which lists only James ,Isabella and Mary) and also a chart drawn by Dr Robert Moore Kirkpatrick of Ballynagashel and William Wallace Kirkpatrick of Canada (which lists the remaining names) ,it is assumed this lineage is correct. What is not known is the birth order of the children -

It is also not proven that John Kirkpatrick of Ballynagashel House is in fact a son of John and Jane, though it is normally agreed that the Samuel Kirkpatrick of Ballynagashel who died on 4 Jan 1867 ,was most likely his brother.

  • Notes
    • The first land the Kirkpatrick family owned in Antrim was in Drummonds. There were also connections in Kinflea and Carnsampson.

One of the Kirkpatrick brothers who arrived in Ireland in 1690 is thought to be buried in old Ballycastle graveyard near the wall.On the 1838 Ordnance Survey map of Mayo, an old graveyard is marked about 200 yards NE of Ballycastle Cemetery (in Carrowniskey), although there is little trace of it left now.

The family later moved to Ballynagashel, first to Upper Ballynagashel, then to Ballynagashel House itself.

Ballynagashel House was originally used as the manse for the Kilraughts congregation, and is now over 250 years old. The rear sections of the house, kitchen, scullery, etc were original and the stones were unhewn, and merely plastered to smooth out the lumps. (The house may still be located by leaving Armoy towards Ballymena.Turn right onto the Kilraughts Road and travel for approximately one mile.Ballynagashel House is situated on the right hand side.)

James Kirkpatrick (1819-1896)added the front of the house, dining room, drawingroom, front bedrooms, at a cost of £200, which butter, produced on the property in a single summer ,paid for. [this is a good indication of how wealthy they were]. The butter was churned in a churn turned by a water wheel , which was very uncommon.

Ref: Records written by James Berry Gow Kirkpatrick c1970(a Great Grandson) detail that a Samuel Kirkpatrick of Ballynagashel House died 4th January 1867 at age 85 -(born 1782) - This gent may have been Johns younger brother.
    • (Research):Ballynagashel is derived from "Baile-na-gcaiseal",a town of the cashels or circular stone forts.

It is probable that this John is the John Kirkpatrick who became involved in the 1789 Rebellion, was tried and sent to Dublin for execution.A local Landlord from Ballymoney spoke on his behalf and he was reprieved and released.Friends in Dublin presented him with a white horse and a carbine for his protection. This carbine survived at Ballynagashel House until the house was eventually sold in the mid-20th century.
