    • In 1683 William was imprisoned in Dunbarton Castle,and tortured ,on a charge of complicity in the Ryhouse or Russell plot.He was released in 1685, went to Holland ,finally returning to England with the Prince of Orange(later William III),his patron at the time of the Revolution.After the Revolution William was presented with the thumbscrews that were used to torture him at Dunbarton.
