A young man named George Ryan was shot dead yesterday evening by another man named William Stone, on the Euabalong-road, two miles from Condobolin. Stone had been keeping company with a young woman named Alice Anderson. The three met at the racecourse yesterday, and some words ensued between Alice and Stone, because she rode with Ryan to the races. She gave Stone to understand that she did not return his affection, that she had had enough of him. This seems to have exasparated him, but nothing more was heard of the matter until Alice and Ryan were going home about 5 o'clock. When about two miles out of town Stone ran out from some brush at the side of the road and pointed a gun at Alice. Her horse took fright and bolted. Ryan dismounted and caught hold of the gun. Stone pointed it close to Ryan's stomach and fired. Ryan fell, whereupon Stone shot him again in the back. Ryan received altogether 27 wounds, and died from hamorrhage. The body was brought into Condobolin and presented in ghastly appearance. An inquest was held this morning and a verdict of murder was returned against Stone Shortly after the tragedy Stone galloped off. The police are now out trying to affect his capture.
Newspaper Article: The Hobert Mercury, 22 Mar 1892, Hobert, Tas, Australia
The body of William Stone, the Condobolin murderer, was discovered by his father early yesterday morning when looking for horses on the Condobolin Common. The body lay on tho edge of a lagoon about 4 mile from tho township, with a wound in the'regicn of the heart, A|gun with one barrel recently discharged lay at the feet of the body, A verdict of died from a wound self-inflicted was recorded. Stone told Baxter on Friday that he had shot Ryan on Thursday night, and intended to shoot himself.
It is highly likely the Alice Anderson in the newspaper article is in fact the step sister of Alfred Lord Anderson ,who married Sarah Ellen Stone,(younger sister of the above mentioned William Stone) and also step sister of George Alfred Anderson ,who married Ellen Margaret Stone(also a younger sister of William Stone).
