  • Notes
    • Colonel James Kirkpatrick,"The Handsome" is somewhat of an enigma, for although his life and story are fairly well documented , his ancestry is somewhat vague.

James is thought to have left South Carolina, and settled in HollyDale ,Kent ,with his father ,prior to entering the HEICS.
Colonel James Kirkpatrick was the author of a pamphlet on the ' Organization of a Body of Light Troops for Detached Service in the East Indies' (London, 1769, 2nd edit. 1781), and in a critical notice of that work is described as ' a cavalry leader of experience' [Monthly Review, 1769).
He was in command of the troops at Fort Marlborough, Sumatra, in 1777,and he returned home in 1779.
He had previously returned in 1770(the year of his father's death) and on 20th Dec. 1770,wrote a letter to Sir Thomas Kirkpatrick ,the 3rd Baronet of Closeburn whilst "in town",apologising for not making a personal visit(which seems to indicate a family relationship).(Ref:"Memoir respecting the family of Kirkpatrick of Closeburn in Nithsdale with notices of some Collaterals",private memoirs, page 60.)
