Ref: The Inverell Argus (NSW1899 - 1904) Tuesday 6 January 1903:
"Thomas Albert Makim, aged 18 (son of Mr.John Makim, of Gum Flat) which occurred at Armidale on 29th ultimo, the cause being typhoid fever. How he contracted the complaint is not known, but it is thought that taking soft drinks containing unwholesome substances had something to do with it. The young man started from home with travelling sheep (his father's) for Armidale district, and became very unwell on the way. He subsequently became a patient in the Armidale Hospital, where he got the greatest possible attention from the medical and nursing staffs, but without avail, and he died as stated above. He was a young man of much promise, and his untimely death was a severe blow to his parents and relatives. It was intended to bring the body to Gum Flat for interment, but the Commissioners could not supply a funeral car sooner than Thursday (four days after the death). The arrangements had then to be altered, and deceased was buried in the Armidale cemetery."
