- John entered his birth year as 1920 on enlistment papers in WW II, Service number NX100661.This was done by many young men to bypass the requirement for parental pemission for anyone under the age of 21 years.
He had badgered his parents from his 18th birthday to allow him to join the Navy- they finally relented but would only agree if he joined the AIF-which they thought would be "safer".
