- The family moved around the Victorian Goldfields . During gold rush times Dunolly and the surrounding district turned up more gold nuggets than any other region in Australia and became known as the "Golden Triangle". Gold found in the area included the then largest gold nugget in the world, the 69 kilogram "Welcome Stranger"', which was found in 1869 in nearby Moliagul

- As a teenager he worked the Goldfields of California, USA.William arrived in New South Wales ( disembarked in Melbourne)on 9th June 1855 , a passenger on the vessel Wonga Wonga ,and travelled on to Melbourne.His occupation was recorded in the manifest as a Miner ,aged 26 years.(Remarks in the manifest are "Miner, English, to Melbourne Victoria")

He travelled to Bendigo, where he continued mining. William spent his life as a farmer and an axe man. He owned a farm at Fenton's Creek before his marriage to Amelia. In 1869 his occupation was a miner. Their grave is close to the entrance at St. Arnaud Cemetery.
