- .John attended The National School until his 15th year ,took a preparatory course in Classics under Rev.John Paul Marcus and proceeded in 1861 to complete his studies at the Royal Belfast Academical Institute.He persued the regular course in arts and theology ,graduating in 1867 .He was then licenced to preach by the Presbytery of Route. His first appointment was to the First Presbyterian Church,Newton Hamilton,Co.Armagh ,where he was ordained on 28th May 1868 and remained there for six years. He later emigrated to America,departing Liverpool, aboard the Helvetia, and arriving at Castle Garden,Manhattan USA on 8 Sept 1879. Shortly after his arrival , he was approached to replace the Rev James Gardner Robb,( who was returning to Galway,Ireland)at Cooke Presbyterian Church ,Toronto,Canada .His induction took place on 5th February 1880. Subsequent to his pastorate in Cooke's Church,which concluded on 3rd February 1885,John spent several years in the pastorate of Westminister,Philadelphia,later moving to Boston and West Virginia.The latter years of his life were spent in Philadelphia,until his passing in 1909. Known as "Big John" it was often stated he never lost his "North Antrim tongue" and "walked like a Farmer". John never married and his estate was bequeathed to the children of his brother James.
