- Ref:Bathurst Free Press and Mining Journal (NSW : 1851 - 1904) Thursday 19 December 1889"Death of an Old Resident. - A few years ago there were few men in Bathurst known and more respected than Mr. John Scotford, but of late years he has been absent from the town, so that recently only to his old friends was he known. He came to the City of the Plains thirty four years ago and for a long time was engaged in the tailoring establishment of the late Mr. Samuel Bray. When the late Mr. Butterworth left Bathurst for England Mr. Scotford, who was one of his most intimate friends, accompanied him, and since his return to the colony he has nor refilled for any great while in our city, but has been visiting his children, who live in distant parts. His last days, however, were spent in the city to which he had become attached and bound by so many ties. Some few years ago, while staying at Bowral with his married daughter, Mrs. Hooper, Mr. Scotford had an attack which seriously affected his health. After he recovered sufficiently he came to Bathurst, since which time he has been staying with his son, Mr. William Scotford. He appeared to be gaining strength, but about three weeks ago was again taken seriously ill. He suffered in tensely until released by death this morning at 6 o'clock. He was seventy years of age, and leaves a family of two daughters and one son ; the latter is Mr. William, Scotford, now holding a responsible position in the city, while his two daughters are residing, one in Sydney, (Mrs. Atwater), and the youngest at Bowral, (Mrs. Hooper). Mr. Scotford has never taken a prominent part in public matters, but was one of the foremost workers in the Presbyterian Church. The funeral will move from his son's residence to morrow morning at 11 o'clock."
