- Walter arrived in Australia in 1848 .He then walked from Sydney to Bathurst .Immediately after the discovery of gold he was engaged in mining with varied success, and was by turn a gold buyer, butcher, storekeeper, and hotelkeeper,at various times holding licences for the Paragon, Imperial, Courthouse, Clubhouse, and Post Office hotels. He was never in need of a doctor, the initial visit coming just hours before his death at his son Edwards residence in Leadville. Ref:The Sydney Morning Herald ,Tuesday 5 May 1925.
