Cause: a compound fracture of the foot turning gangrenous ,after a cart wheel crushed his foot. |
- In July 1892 ,on a trip to Goondiwindi to get building materials for a shed,a mare with a bad temperament moved off at the wrong moment with the dray and ran the heavy wheel over John's foot, causing a compound fracture of the ankle. He was admitted to the Goondiwindi hospital but would not give consent for an amputation , resulting in gangrene setting in , and he died on the 11th July, 1892,aged 45 years
The final letter John wrote to his family reads "The Hospital, 4th July 1892 . My Dear Sarah and Children, What a terrible accident happened to me through that brute of a mare. I am glad to be able to inform you that I am going as well as can be expected. The doctor is very dear and Mr Cameron is very kind.-the man in attendance. They had put me under chloroform to get the good set-it is a compound fracture of the ankle. The doctor at one time thought it necessary to amputate the foot-but I would not consent-rather that I would suffer pain than lose m poor foot, but it is quite necessary that you should know that the pain is beyond endurance. The Dr is often taking off the splints and casing it in plaster of paris and he said he did not expect it to be looking so well.It has been in splints since Saturday afternoon. It will not be necessary for you to come in.I shall write according as I get along. Let Charlie go on with the shed as if I was there.I do not care if I ever see that mare again. With fondest love to my dear wife and all the children. It was a sad ending, we were bidding to get home early. I am in great pain.I must close. Your loving husband John Woods"
