Clarence and Richmond Examiner and New England Advertiser (Grafton, NSW : 1859 - 1889) Saturday 3 July 1886 p 3 Article
"Grafton Police Court TUESDAY, JUNE 29.-Before the P.M. BIGAMY. James Williams, alias Walker, was brought up under a warrant, charging him with bigamy. Constable Cowie deposed, that the previous evening he went to the residence of accused, and asked him his proper name, and he replied "James Williams." Asked if he knew a brickmaker named James Walker in the district, and he replied he did not. He said, in reply to a question, that he might have gone by that name in Sydney. Told him he had a warrant for the arrest of James Walker, and believed him to be the man. Read him the warrent issued from Sydney, charging him with having, on the 1st February, 1882, married Clara Jane Riley, his former wife-Mary Hannah Walker, being then living. He said there was a mistake somewhere, that he was not the person. From the description given of James Walker, believe accused to be that person. He was remanded to Sydney to be dealt with. Bail was objected to by the police, and it was not granted."
Ref:Clarence and Richmond Examiner and New England Advertiser (Grafton, NSW : 1859 - 1889)Saturday 14 August 1886. "BIGAMY.-At the Sydney Quarter Sessions, on August 4, 1886,James Walker was charged with bigamy, he having married Mary Hannah Bussey on January 1. 1876 , and afterwards on February 21, 1882, at Grafton, he married Clara Jane Reilly, the said Mary Hannah Bussey then being alive. He pleaded guilty. Prisoner's mother stated that when he was first married he was 19 years of age, and that she told him the marriage was not legal, and was not binding upon him. His Honor sentenced prisoner to one year's Imprisonment."

Some records also list Clifford Barker Williams(1887-1954) as a son of this marriage ,but this is incorrect.Cliffords parents were James Williams ,of Clerkenwell, London ,and Clara Barker. This particular marriage is recorded in The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954) Tuesday 12 July 1887 "WILLIAMS-BARKER.-May 4,1887, by special license, at St. James' Church, Sydney, by the Rev. James eventually moves to Queensland and is living with Matilda Smith in Grove St, Albion QLD according to the 1913 Electoral Roll. Notes |
- Clarence and Richmond Examiner (Grafton, NSW : 1889 - 1915) Saturday 25 March 1905 p 4 Article "GRAFTON POLICE COURT. Yesterday, before the P.M. Herbert Emerson, on bail, under remand from the Water Police Court. Sydney, was charged with stealing a quantity of tools, utensils, clothing, and 10 books from a tent at Cangai, the property of James Walker Williams. Mr. D. Lobban appeared for accused. "
Clarence and Richmond Examiner (Grafton, NSW : 1889 - 1915) Saturday 1 April 1905 "Complainant stated that he is a brick maker, and went to Cangai in October last, taking with him a quantity of tools and other articles. He came down to Grafton in December, and returned on 20th February and found that nearly everything the tent contained had gone. He went to a tent that was occupied by accused, and saw some of the missing articles there."
- (Research):Some records have recorded William Williams and Ellen McGregor as the parents but this appears incorrect .James was born James Walker ,son of Joseph Walker and Christina Bruce in 1855(NSW BDM Ref:V1855377 53/1855 ).This appears to be his mother Christina's first of three marriages. In 1875 she married Thomas Allum in Wollongong,NSW,and then in 1891 she married William Harper,in Grafton,NSW.
An article in the Clarence and Richmond Examiner (Grafton, NSW : 1889 - 1915), Saturday 3 December 1910, page 1. refers. IN THE SUPREME COURT OF NEW SOUTH WALES.Probate Jurisdiction. "In the Estate of CHRISTINA HARPER, formerly CHRISTINA ALLUM,late of South Grafton, in the State of, New South Wales, widow, deceased Intestate.Application will be made after fourteen days from the publication hereof that administration of the Estate of the above named deceased may be granted to JAMES WALKER WILLIAMS, the son of the said deceased, and all notices may be served at the offices of the undersigned. All persons having any claim against the Estate of the said deceased are requested to at once send full particulars of the same to the undersigned . McGUREN and POLLACK, Proctors for the Administrator,Victoria Street,Grafton"
When James bigamously married Clara Jane Reilly in Grafton,NSW ,he used the alias James Walker Williams - his children and descendants of this marriage are all known as Williams.
