Notes |
- William is described as William Kirkpatrick,Junior,Merchant ,in his son William and daughter Jane Forbes Baptism records.(Witnesses John Fraser and William Kirkpatrick,Senior)
William held the position of Surveyor of Customs, for the port of Dumfries.(Ref:Scottish Record Society -Record of Teataments 1561-1800) He was granted life rent of part of the lands of Newton ,by his cousin Sir James, the 4th Baronet, due to being greatly in debt , caused by the costs of raising such a large family. On his death,he left many debts, largely unpaid ,and some of his lands in Garrel pledged. His son John returned from Ostende to settle his fathers affairs.
In son John's registration of the Conheath Coat of Arms in 1791 ,he describes his father as William Kirkpatrick ,"Baron",of Conheath.(The Conheath Coat of Arms copies the Closeburn Coat of Arms ,but with an additional three stars included, one on the collar point, and two in the flank gules)
- (Research):It will be noted that the Conheath and Kirkmichael Kirkpatrick's tended to use names Margaret, Elizabeth, Jane, Alexander, Thomas, and William whilst the Closeburn Kirkpatrick's, commonly used Thomas, James, Roger, Yvone, and Samuel.
