Notes |
- William was brought up in the household of Gilbert Cory with his step brothers and step sisters and it was here that the foundation was laid for the wonderful Christian life that William was to lead .As a youth he moved to the Gostwych property of Edward Cory at Uralla, where he learnt the skills of sheep property management .At the age of 20 years he was managing "Paradise Creek" Station near Inverell,NSW ,for the Dangar Brothers.
Shortly after his marriage to Christina Ferguson on the 8th of September 1881, William was offered the position of Manager of " Mooki Springs" Station near Quirindi but he declined the offer. Later he held a similar position on "Newstead" Station near Inverell. One day he found a roll of notes to the value of one hundred pounds . He promptly returned them to a Mr. Maclean who had lost them and who was most grateful to have them returned. Mr. Maclean offered William a partnership in a store at Tingha where tin mining was booming.Wiliiam accepted the offer of the partnership but with just a verbal agreement. Later when the business failed William lost his investment. He then bought "Pine Lodge " an orchard farm at Beaulieu, Gum Flat near Inverell,NSW.
"Pine Lodge" was sold about 1908 and the family moved to a grazing property called "Mount View" Tarban in the Tenterfield district . During World War 1 and after selling "Mount View" in 1916 residence was taken up for a short time at Scone. The family returned to the Tenterfield area when William purchased "Terrica " Sandy Flat. This was a small farm of about 156 acres .
"Terrica" was sold to Frank Petrie in 1933 for 420 pounds, the low price being attributed to the Depression.
William & Christina eventually moved to "The Knoll" Sunnyside and made their home with their daughter Mabs and her husband William Waugh . William and Christina both died at "The Knoll",William in 1933 and Christina in 1943.
