Notes |
- Dennis was 19 years old when he and Robert Goodwin, aged 20, and William Goodwin, age 23 were tried at the London Criminal Court on 02/04/1800 on the charges of breaking and entering the house of Benjamin Holdsworth. Dennis had been arrested at Daubignes Place, Pentonville, a London locality off Pentonville Road and not far from present day Kings Cross Station. All three defendants were found guilty of the offences with Dennis Green and Robert Goodwin being sentenced to death and William Goodwin being sentenced to transportation for 14 years. The sentences imposed on Dennis and Robert was later reduced to transportation for life. On the 18/11/1800, the "Earl Cornwallis" set sail from England with 193 males and 95 female convicts on board, of whom 27 males and 8 females died during the long voyage of 208 days, arriving in Botany Bay on 12/06/1801. The "Earl Cornwallis" also carried small numbers of military personnel and free settlers as passengers.
On 31/01/1816 Dennis was to be granted a Conditional Pardon by Governor Lachlan Macquarie. The document was apparently stolen at some later date and was "Deposed to be robbed of" and eventually found on 15/09/1825 in the possession of a Charles Walton and 'torn up'. A new Conditional Pardon was issued to Dennis on 10/10/1825.
It is not known in what capacity Dennis was firstly engaged, i.e. whether he was placed in a labour gang building roads, bridges etc, or whether he was assigned to a settler, as was often the case. However, the Muster of 1806, which listed all inhabitants of the Colony (excluding children and the Military) showed Dennis as having been granted a Ticket of Leave and as being a Protestant and located at Parramatta. While the 1811 Muster did not indicate where or in what work Dennis was involved, the Musters for 1814, 1817 and 1818 showed him as being a landholder in the Parramatta District, "off stores". In 1819 Dennis was a landholder in the Liverpool District, a tenant of a Mr Hosking's at Bringelly, a situation which was to exist for many years. The 1828 Census confirmed that Dennis was truly a successful farmer, even at that early date. He resided at 'Parkham' in the District of Cooke and was shown as being 'owner and tenant' of 400 acres and having 70 acres cleared, 50 cultivated, 8 horses and 81 horned cattle. It seems that his holdings and tenancies comprised 3 other properties besides 'Parkham', viz. the West Bargo grant in the District of Camden and two tenancies in the Burragorang Valley, 'Due Riley' and 'Dunkerley'. He had a staff of 10 servants including 8 males being stockman, labourers, a ploughman and an overseer and 2 females, a housemaid and a dairymaid.
