- Ref:The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842 - 1954) ,Friday 29 January 1858 "On the 13th December last, killed by the natives of Tanna, in the 29th year of his age, Frederick Thomas, only son of Mr. D.Outtrim, of the Kent Brewery ; and on the 23rd instant, at Kensington Street, Harry, youngest son of deceased, aged 12 months."
Frederick was the captain and part owner of the schooner Anna and Jane(later wrecked on the Isle of Pines,New Caledonia ) , and the schooner had "called off the N.W. side of Tana in December last, for the purpose of obtaining provisions, but Captain Outtrim was persuaded by the natives to return to the vessel in his boat, and bring on shore some muskets to trade. This was done, and Captain Outtrim and three others, one a chief of Kotuma, went on shore unarmed. They had no sooner landed when the natives set upon them and killed the captain and one hand. The chief of Rotuma with the other hand, managed to get away by swimming, and were picked up by the Blue Jacket, under Captain Edwards, and landed at Rotuma. Captain Outtrim is nearly related to Mr. Benjamin Palmer, of this city, and leaves a wife and family"-Extract from The Sydney Morning Herald ,Wednesday 10 February 1858
In 1858 ,Jessie was a witness in a committal hearing regarding a case of theft.The charged seaman ,Dennis Mulcahy,was formerly master of her husbands schooner,the Anna and Jane,and took charge of the schooner after Capt.Outtrims murder in December 1857 ,until it was wrecked on The Isle of Pines.He was charged with theft of her husbands property after failing to return all his belongings on return to Sydney.Mulcahy was committed for trial.
