"PERSONAL Our Mackay correspondent telegraphs :The death occurred on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock of Mr Arthur Bookes, after a short illness. Deceased arrived from Britian about 26 years ago and subsequently became manager of Paxton and Co. He then entered into business as a commission agent and public accountant and took an active interest in public mattters. He was a lover of outdoor sport, being trustee of the local bowling club and an active member of the Mackay Turf Club. The funeral today was a large and representative one and included a great number of Masons from various lodges, who formed a proceession."
The edition of Wednesday 24 January 1917 stated he was 51 years of age.
"The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Canon Norman, who read the English Church Servlce, and by Mr T. Beatty, as chaplain of the Masonlc order, to which deceased belonged. Deceased was 51 years of age. He leaves a wife, son and three daughters....."
