- Gerhard undertook his textile apprenticeship in Ireland where he met Annie Oulton. He later became part owner of a Spinning and Weaving Mill in Frjanovo,Russia ,and would travel between Karlsruhe in Germany and Frjanovo.He disliked the climate in Russia, and eventually contracted pneumonia and died in Frjanovo in 1911.
