  • Notes
    • During the New Guinea campaign in WWI "Cheg" fell down a ravine on the Kokoda Track and broke his shoulder…he was missing for 5 days and was listed as AWOL..he scrambled back up with all his gear, which took about a day and a half, and by that time he was cut off from his mates.
He said he "hung about" and hid until he could find a group to report to…it was in that time that he saw atrocities by the Japanese ,one of which was cannibalism. When he returned back to the 2/2nd he spent time in a medical camp at "Menari" on the Track for pneumonia and malaria. He never said anything about how he felt except to say.."It was no joke over there."

His brother in law Sam Kirkpatrick relates the story that Cheg was on point duty during a patrol on the Track and was shot at by a Japanese sniper hidden up a tree some distance away. The shot knocked Cheg's helmet off and grazed his skull - his immediate response was to despatch the sniper with one shot ,followed by a stream of abuse, and then continued on patrol.
