"

- James was sentenced to death at the 28 Mar 1787 Bury St Edmunds Assizes for the burglary on the night of 1 Nov 1786 of the widow Charlotte Hunt's house at Needham market. He was reprieved soon afterwards to transportation for life and was maintained by the county in gaol until 24 Jul 1788 when he was sent to the Portsmouth hulk 'Lion' age given as 35. On 8 Sep 1789 he was embarked on the ship 'Guardian'. He survived the near-sinking of the ship after it was holed by an iceberg off the Cape and was transferred with 19 others to the ship 'Surprize', arriving in the colony on 26 Jun 1790.He was recommended for a conditional pardon for his role in helping to save the Guardian from sinking. In Feb 22nd 1792 and 11th Aug 1804 James appears on a list of all grants and leases of land registered in the Colonial Secretary's Office.
