Generation: 4

  1. 8.  William GOULDING, , Transported Convict was born about 1801 in vicinity of Bath, England; died on 3 Jan 1841 in Hunters Hill, New South Wales, Australia.

    Notes:

William Goulding was often spelt William Golding in early settlement records.

William White, Robert White and William Goulding were arrested for a robbery committed in the Parish of Twiverton, near Bath, on 5th February 1822 for stealing some woollen cloth and kerseymere from the domain of Francis Naish. They were tried at the Lent Assizes in Somerset on 30th March 1822 and convicted of larceny and sentenced to 7 years transportation. They departed England aboard the Princess Royal on 5th Nov 1822, arrived in Sydney on 9th March 1823.

The records listed William Goulding as a native of Bath however a search could find no records of his birth in Bath or the County of Somerset. An 1841 census for Somerset listed a few Goulding's not born in Bath however .

31st December 1823-31st March 1824 William was assigned to work as a Sawyer for Simeon Lord* at Port Stephens with the Cedar Party group. Natives attacked the group killing James Lewis, an old free resident of the Colony and plundered their huts. Fearing for their lives with no help available, they walked into Newcastle where they were taken into custody on 7th February 1824 for being at large, contary to the tenor of their bonds. The declaration to the Newcastle Commandant by the 11 men showed Willaim had signed his own name whereas the others put their mark.

The Assignment of Convict Colony Records of 8th August 1824 shows that Simeon Lord* had defaulted on payments of 2 years bond for William employed as a Sawyer.

    Ticket of Leave No: 28/343 - 18th August 1828
    Certificate of Freedom No-(TL 28/343) ,5th May 1830

William must have meet Ann Gordon sometime after this. She was a free person, and a widow although there is no record of a marriage during this time until her death on 1st June 1837 they had 5 children.

On 22nd August 1837, William Goulding wrote a letter to the Governor requesting that 3 of his 5 children who were entirely dependant of him for support, be admitted to the Male Orphan School, as he had no other means of earning a livelihood but by daily labouring as a sawyer in the bush. Thus it was out of his power to pay a person to mind them during his absence from home.

The children were listed as: William Goulding born 5th November 1830 ,John Goulding born 3rd January 1832. (baptised as Nathaniel John) and Eugene Goulding born 20th January 1833. The signature on his letter is identical to the one on the declaration to the Newcastle Commandant.

During the time until William's death on 3rd January 1841, he must have visited the boys ,as William Goulding and Ann Gordon were listed as their parents on their death notices. Also they remained in contact with their younger sister Sarah Marcella Goulding born 9th February 1834. She and her husband George Wicks were witnesses at the marriage of her brother Willam to Emma Squires on 16th January 1855.

Who the fifth child was, is not certain however there was a John Goldin born 1830 registered at St Patricks Parramatta, parents William and Ann. Reference LH V1830 708 145. There is also a death record(12044/1894 ) detailing the death,in Ryde, of a Henry R Goulding, son of William and Ann .

*( Simeon Lord, the fourth child of ten children of Simeon Lord and Ann Fielden of Dobroyd (near Todmorden ), Yorkshire , England , was born about 28 January 1771. In April 1790, as a 19-year-old, he was convicted to 7 years transportation at the Manchester Quarter Sessions in Lancashire for the theft of 21 pieces of cloth, 100 yards (91 m) of calico and 100 yards (91 m) of muslin. Lord was then transported to New South Wales as part of the Third Fleet on board the Atlantic. He arrived in Sydney on 20 August 1791, and the convict lad was assigned to Captain Thomas Rowley of the New South Wales Corps.Lord later developed many business interests in the colony, and became one of Sydney's wealthiest men)

(Research):Newspapers of the time reported the trial and subsequent punishment as follows:
    .
The Bristol Mercury (Bristol, England), Saturday, March 9, 1822; Issue 1668

"Wm Goulding, Wm White, and Robert White alias Cocker, three most notorious characters in Avon-street were on Friday committed for trial, charged with breaking open the factory of Mr Nash, of Twerton, on the night of Feb. 5th and stealing a quantity of brown cloth, and about 16 yards of ribbed cassiniere, value 35/. Robt. White and Goulding each took some of the cloth to a tailor, to be made up, and the cloth being not quite finished, it was identified by several of Mr Nash's workmen. - There is a second charge of felony against Robt. White, W. Goulding and John Sheppard, another notorious character, upon the voluntary confession of David Rees, an accomplice, viz. for robbing a wagon belonging to Mr E L Lye, of Warminster, of a trunk containing wearing apparel &c., value 20/. the property of Mr Thos. Tovey, of Bath."

The Bristol Mercury (Bristol, England), Saturday, April 13, 1822; Issue 1673

"Somerset Assizes concluded on Monday evening; the following are the sentences of the prisoners, in addition to those we reported last week:- "Transportation... "Seven Years: Wm and Robert White, and Wm Goulding, (old offenders) for breaking into a factory at Twerton, and stealing kerseymere..."

    Notes:

NSW BDM Death Register record V18372552 21/1837 -for Ann Gordon

    Notes:

    Married:
Ann had been previously married to John Gordon and after her death in 1837 it would appear that Ann and William Goulding's three eldest sons were placed into the orphan school ,with the two youngest children,Sarah and Henry being raised by their aunty Mary Rutledge(their mother's sister) ,herself a widow with eight children of her own ranging in ages from six months to ten years.

The Goulding children Nathaniel,Eugene and Sarah are found in the NSW BDM under the surname Gordon as it appears their parents were not married at the time of their birth - the registrations record both parents names in the Surname position of the registry- as was common if the parents were not married. They obviously took their fathers surname as future records list them as Gouldings.

"Village of Ryde.-An inquest was held at Mr. Dowdell's, Steam Boat Inn, on view of the body of Ann Bragg, wife of William Bragg, district constable of Kissing Point. The husband of the deceased being sworn, stated my late wife was forty-seven years of age, she has been ill six years , Doctors Hill, Gwynne, Robertson, and Rutter, have seen her, Dr Cartwright examined her, and told me to listen at the chest and I would be convinced of her having water on the chest; Dr. Douglass has lately seen her; deceased was in Sydney last week, and came home on Saturday night, and was not worse than usual, she attended divine service on Sunday, and a prayer meeting on Monday ; was as well as usual at family prayer on Monday night ; she retired to read at nine o'clock ; I went to bed at ten o'clock, we conversed about family matters, and upon the sacred scriptures, till two o'clock, I awoke at six o'clock, and saw her out of bed with our grandchild in her arms ; she came into bed again ; I said, " it rains ," she replied "yes, it has thundered and lightened very much," I said, " I will set the tubs to catch the water;" she replied " yes ;" I was in the act of putting on my socks, when I heard her make a noise of hoarseness in the throat ; I said " what is the matter? '" she did not answer; I put my hand on her foot, but she did not move it, as the place was not very light, I lit a candle, and saw she was dead ; I was formerly employed as Dispenser in the Parramatta Hospital, and have seen many sudden deaths from similar causes ; I was of opinion she would die suddenly, and have therefore put written directions in my children's pockets when they have gone to Sydney with her, lest she should die and not be known. Dr. Rutter deposed: I have known the deceased many years, and attended her professionally some years ago; she was labouring under disease of the heart; I have since been in company with five or six other medical practitioners who have attended deceased, and who perfectly concurred with me in reference to the disease ; the water on the chest is merely a symptom of disease of the heart ; sudden death is the usual termination of this disease, and what might have been expected in this instance. The Jury returned a verdict accordingly. "
