When her brothers returned from active service, some wounded, most traumatised, she would spend many hours quietly listening,as each brother attempted to unburden themselves of the horrors of War.As therapy she would also dance with them on the back verandah of the family home, as this seemed to help settle the demons. Each asked Kath never to speak to others of the trauma they were experiencing. She never did.

    Notes:

James Marriage Certificate states he was a Merchant/Dealer at 19 Academy St. Belfast Records located to date indicate James left for Australia in January 1881 aboard the "John Elder ",as an unassisted passenger, and Catherine and their daughter Margaret(listed on the ships manifest as I for Infant) followed 12 months later , departing on the 14th January 1882 from London, also as unassisted passengers, aboard the "Lusitania". One must assume James travelled out first to secure employment and a residence - and once having gained employment on the Upper canal as a stonemason-wrote home advising Catherine to join him. James was the first Presbyterian Lay Preacher and Church Elder in the area and was instrumental in the building of the Presbyterian Church in Hoxton Park.

(Research):James passed away in 1904, due to both physical exhaustion and diabetes at 52 years of age. The position of Maintenance Overseer passed to his eldest son John, and later, when John commenced employment with the Newtown Municipal Council, brother Charles took over.Sadly ,he was killed by lightning whilst inspecting the canal during a severe storm in 1925. Joseph, who at this time was a tram driver in Sydney, applied for and was granted the position. He retained this position until his death in 1957.He and his family were the last of the Kirkpatrick's to occupy the cottage.

James married Catherine Jane MCCOOKE on 2 Dec 1880 in St Anne's Church of Ireland Cathedral, Belfast, Ireland. Catherine (daughter of Charles MCCOOKE, ,of Drumdollagh, County Antrim, Northern Ireland and Lily MCLEAN) was born on 18 May 1857 in Armoy, County Antrim, Northern Ireland; was christened in Aug 1858 in Armoy Presbyterian Church, Moyle, North Antrim; died on 22 Sep 1941 in The "Braeside "Priv Hospital Stanmore .NSW.Australia; was buried on 23 Sep 1941 in Presbyterian Cemetery, Liverpool, New South Wales, Australia. Notes:

Catherines Marriage Certificate states Catherine was a milliner employed at 19 Academy St,Belfast. (James Kirkpatrick's shop)at the time of her marriage .

(Research):James and Catherine's eldest son John had purchased a house at 88 Alice St Newtown (an inner Sydney suburb)in 1917,and moved there from Hoxton Park when he commenced work with the Newtown Council.Catherine was residing there with John and his family until she passed away in her 84th year in 1941. She was greatly loved by all the family (as was James)and renowned throughout the district for her cooking .From the time of becoming widowed she had worn the "Widow's Weed's" ,a totally black outfit ,from head to toe,and never wore any other more colourful outfits. Catherine cherished her Irish roots and a tear would always appear in her eye as she listened to her Grandsons singing a favoutite stanza during the many family gatherings. Her favourite was 'A Farewell to C.E.G " by Charles Kingsley..

    Notes:

A meat salesman, William migrated to Australia ,and his wife and all surviving children arrived in Sydney ,via Victoria, in November 1886 aboard the Duke of Devonshire.( Their fourth child Andrew Clydesdale had died in 1881 at about 12 months of age).Williams name does not appear on the passenger manifest of the voyage,so he may have travelled out at an earlier date ,or travelled as a crew member on the Duke of Devonshire,to offset costs.

He secured a house in Rickety Street, Mascot (a Sydney suburb), later moving to Lemon Grove near Penrith NSW. Note: Lemongrove was first settled in 1827, when it was occupied by John and Sarah MacHenry who erected a residence called "Lemon Grove House". There is evidence that suggests that part of the land was used as a lemon orchard during this period, hence the name Lemongrove.

Years later Lemon Grove House was demolished and the land subdivided into a total of 249 lots which were offered for sale on 24th January, 1885. William appears on the 1902 Electoral role, for the Penrith Parramatta electorate ,with his son James and daughter Marghretta. His occupation is listed as Engine Fitter with the Railways at Penrith on a wage of 10 Shillings and four pence a day.All his children were taught to play a musical instrument, Alexander being the foremost as he could play the piano, violin and a number of wind instruments, including the flute. Alexanders wife Iris was a fine pianiste.Perritt Place, located in South Penrith,is likely named in honour of Williams contribution to his fellow citizens.William Perritt became a leading citizen becoming conductor of the Penrith Philharmonic Orchestra and probably of the Municipal Band. He also served as a councillor on the Penrith Municipal Council from 1900 to 1907.He declined re-election in 1905 and did not serve on council this year due to illness.

Deceased was born in county Longford, Ireland, in the year 1840. Twenty-four years later he arrived in Sydney and his first employment in this country was as a dairy farming hand at Kiama. In those days there were no awards governing hours and pay and he worked 18 hours a day for the princely sum of 15/ per week. After twelve months at Kiama he sought a change of employment and applied for admission and was accepted in the mounted police,he gave about ten years service and during that period was stationed at Pilliga, Deniliquin, Wilcannia, Barradean and Menindie, respectively. He would relate many interesting and exciting experience's encountered in the force and he has to his credit the distinction of having captured, with the aid of a black tracker, three armed bush rangers near Milparinka. On his retirement from the force he had attained the rank of sergeant. It was now that he heard the call of the land, and in 1876 he selected "Springfield," at Gum Flat, where he remained until the time of his death.

In carving a home in what then was primeval bush, Mr. and Mrs. Makim had all the early pioneering difficulties to contend with. The railway extended only us far as Singleton and transport in the days before motor cars, was an arduous proposition. The fact, however, that they were able to carry on and remain on the property for over half a century, speaks much for their perseverance and the faith they held in the district.

Whilst successfully working his selection, the late Mr. Makim found time to take his share of the responsibilities of public matters. He was one of the provisional councillors of Bannockburn Shire and subsequently served on the council for two terms.

The family traditions in this respect have since and are still being upheld. One son, Cr. G. S. Makim, is at present a member of the same shire, and other son, Mr. R. W. Mnkin, is a member of Warialda P.P. Board, and yet another, recently deceased at Manly, was for many years interested in local government. Deceased was also a committeeman of the P and A. Association for several years, and in the early days was a large exhibitor of cattle at the annual show. As a Justice of the Peace, too, he for many years gave service to the community. 6. 13.  Margaret WOODS was born on 28 Aug 1848 in Templemore, Tipperary , Ireland (daughter of John WOODS, ,Tenant farmer , of Barnane, Templemore,Ireland and Margaret"Peggy" MIDDLETON); died on 10 Apr 1927 in Springfield , Gum Flat .NSW, Australia; was buried on 11 Apr 1927 in Gum Flat, New South Wales, Australia.

    Notes:

Margaret emigrated to Australia in 1872 to marry her fiance John .

After much research,I have come to the conclusion Margaret arrived in Melbourne, not Sydney.

There are no records located to prove that she arrived in Sydney , but there is a record of a 23 years Irish lass named Margaret Woods, a farm servant, arriving in Melbourne,on the Colonial Empire ,on the 24th September 1872 .(The Colonial Empire departed Plymouth, UK, on the 22 June 1872)

This record aligns with the family spoken history that after arriving she was accompanied by a colleague of Johns on the 3 week journey in order to be married in Hay NSW on 17th October 1872 . Hay is approx 400 km North of Melbourne by road

    Notes:

William was brought up in the household of Gilbert Cory with his step brothers and step sisters and it was here that the foundation was laid for the wonderful Christian life that William was to lead .As a youth he moved to the Gostwych property of Edward Cory at Uralla, where he learnt the skills of sheep property management .At the age of 20 years he was managing "Paradise Creek" Station near Inverell,NSW ,for the Dangar Brothers.

Shortly after his marriage to Christina Ferguson on the 8th of September 1881, William was offered the position of Manager of " Mooki Springs" Station near Quirindi but he declined the offer. Later he held a similar position on "Newstead" Station near Inverell. One day he found a roll of notes to the value of one hundred pounds . He promptly returned them to a Mr. Maclean who had lost them and who was most grateful to have them returned. Mr. Maclean offered William a partnership in a store at Tingha where tin mining was booming.Wiliiam accepted the offer of the partnership but with just a verbal agreement. Later when the business failed William lost his investment. He then bought "Pine Lodge " an orchard farm at Beaulieu, Gum Flat near Inverell,NSW.

"Pine Lodge" was sold about 1908 and the family moved to a grazing property called "Mount View" Tarban in the Tenterfield district . During World War 1 and after selling "Mount View" in 1916 residence was taken up for a short time at Scone. The family returned to the Tenterfield area when William purchased "Terrica " Sandy Flat. This was a small farm of about 156 acres .

"Terrica" was sold to Frank Petrie in 1933 for 420 pounds, the low price being attributed to the Depression.

William & Christina eventually moved to "The Knoll" Sunnyside and made their home with their daughter Mabs and her husband William Waugh . William and Christina both died at "The Knoll",William in 1933 and Christina in 1943.
