    The death occured at a late hour on Tuesday night, at his residece, High Street, Launceston, of Mr. James Corcoran Newton, formerly a member of the House of Assembly, and Chief Secretary and Minister for Mines and Forestry in Sir Walter Lee's Ministry, from August 14 to October 25, 1923

    Mr. Newton, who was 65 years of age, was one of the best known personalities in the North. He had been ill for a considerable time, and it was due to ill-health that he did not contest his seat in the House of Assembly at the last election. He came to Tasmania from Victoria as Manager of J.C. Hutton Pty Ltd., and was for some years in that position with the firm. He has not been long in the State before he began to take a prominent part in Public affairs.

    Mr Newton leaves a widow and a grown-up family of seven. His children are the Rev. A Newton Waratah,Messrs. J. C. Newton Launceston,, Victor Newton Hobart, Mesdames A. J. Wilson and H Ride, Misses Mabel and Hilda Newton

    The funeral will leave the residence this afternoon at 3 o'clock for the Carr Villa Cemetery.

    Probate has been granted. The will of the late Mr. James Corcoran Newton, formerely a member of the house of Assembly, and at one time Chief Secretary. Mr Newton who died at Launceston on March 13, left ten thousand, two hundred and twenty five pounds to his wife Mrs Rowena Newton.

    James married Rowena Augusta EMERY in 1885 in Footscray, Melbourne, Victoria.Australia. Rowena was born in 1860 in Braidwood, New South Wales, Australia; died on 15 Dec 1940 in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia; was buried on 17 Dec 1940 in Carr Villa Memorial Park, Launceston, Tasmania.
