Deceased was born in county Longford, Ireland, in the year 1840. Twenty-four years later he arrived in Sydney and his first employment in this country was as a dairy farming hand at Kiama. In those days there were no awards governing hours and pay and he worked 18 hours a day for the princely sum of 15/ per week. After twelve months at Kiama he sought a change of employment and applied for admission and was accepted in the mounted police,he gave about ten years service and during that period was stationed at Pilliga, Deniliquin, Wilcannia, Barradean and Menindie, respectively. He would relate many interesting and exciting experience's encountered in the force and he has to his credit the distinction of having captured, with the aid of a black tracker, three armed bush rangers near Milparinka. On his retirement from the force he had attained the rank of sergeant. It was now that he heard the call of the land, and in 1876 he selected "Springfield," at Gum Flat, where he remained until the time of his death.

In carving a home in what then was primeval bush, Mr. and Mrs. Makim had all the early pioneering difficulties to contend with. The railway extended only us far as Singleton and transport in the days before motor cars, was an arduous proposition. The fact, however, that they were able to carry on and remain on the property for over half a century, speaks much for their perseverance and the faith they held in the district.

Whilst successfully working his selection, the late Mr. Makim found time to take his share of the responsibilities of public matters. He was one of the provisional councillors of Bannockburn Shire and subsequently served on the council for two terms.

The family traditions in this respect have since and are still being upheld. One son, Cr. G. S. Makim, is at present a member of the same shire, and other son, Mr. R. W. Mnkin, is a member of Warialda P.P. Board, and yet another, recently deceased at Manly, was for many years interested in local government. Deceased was also a committeeman of the P and A. Association for several years, and in the early days was a large exhibitor of cattle at the annual show. As a Justice of the Peace, too, he for many years gave service to the community. The late Mr. Makim . is survived bv a family of four sons and two daughters, all of whom are well-known in the north-west. The sons are Messrs. John Makiin, of "Hibernia" Warialda; Cr. George S. Makim, "Currawarra," Gum Flat; R. W. Makim,Pallamallawa, and Fred W. Makim, of "Springfield," Gum Flat. The daughters are Mrs D Wilson, Garah, and Mrs. R.D. Woods, Parramatta.

The interment took place yesterday at the Gum Flat cemetery.

(The black tracker who alway accompanied John was known as Spider, and his motto was " One eye open all the time boss " )

John married Margaret WOODS on 17 Oct 1872 in Hay, New South Wales, Australia. Margaret (daughter of John WOODS, ,Tenant farmer , of Barnane, Templemore,Ireland and Margaret"Peggy" MIDDLETON) was born on 28 Aug 1848 in Templemore, Tipperary , Ireland; died on 10 Apr 1927 in Springfield , Gum Flat .NSW, Australia; was buried on 11 Apr 1927 in Gum Flat, New South Wales, Australia. 2. 9.  Margaret WOODS was born on 28 Aug 1848 in Templemore, Tipperary , Ireland (daughter of John WOODS, ,Tenant farmer , of Barnane, Templemore,Ireland and Margaret"Peggy" MIDDLETON); died on 10 Apr 1927 in Springfield , Gum Flat .NSW, Australia; was buried on 11 Apr 1927 in Gum Flat, New South Wales, Australia.

    Notes:

Margaret emigrated to Australia in 1872 to marry her fiance John .

After much research,I have come to the conclusion Margaret arrived in Melbourne, not Sydney.

There are no records located to prove that she arrived in Sydney , but there is a record of a 23 years Irish lass named Margaret Woods, a farm servant, arriving in Melbourne,on the Colonial Empire ,on the 24th September 1872 .(The Colonial Empire departed Plymouth, UK, on the 22 June 1872)

This record aligns with the family spoken history that after arriving she was accompanied by a colleague of Johns on the 3 week journey in order to be married in Hay NSW on 17th October 1872 . Hay is approx 400 km North of Melbourne by road

    Notes:

William was brought up in the household of Gilbert Cory with his step brothers and step sisters and it was here that the foundation was laid for the wonderful Christian life that William was to lead .As a youth he moved to the Gostwych property of Edward Cory at Uralla, where he learnt the skills of sheep property management .At the age of 20 years he was managing "Paradise Creek" Station near Inverell,NSW ,for the Dangar Brothers.

Shortly after his marriage to Christina Ferguson on the 8th of September 1881, William was offered the position of Manager of " Mooki Springs" Station near Quirindi but he declined the offer. Later he held a similar position on "Newstead" Station near Inverell. One day he found a roll of notes to the value of one hundred pounds . He promptly returned them to a Mr. Maclean who had lost them and who was most grateful to have them returned. Mr. Maclean offered William a partnership in a store at Tingha where tin mining was booming.Wiliiam accepted the offer of the partnership but with just a verbal agreement. Later when the business failed William lost his investment. He then bought "Pine Lodge " an orchard farm at Beaulieu, Gum Flat near Inverell,NSW.

"Pine Lodge" was sold about 1908 and the family moved to a grazing property called "Mount View" Tarban in the Tenterfield district . During World War 1 and after selling "Mount View" in 1916 residence was taken up for a short time at Scone. The family returned to the Tenterfield area when William purchased "Terrica " Sandy Flat. This was a small farm of about 156 acres .

"Terrica" was sold to Frank Petrie in 1933 for 420 pounds, the low price being attributed to the Depression.

William & Christina eventually moved to "The Knoll" Sunnyside and made their home with their daughter Mabs and her husband William Waugh . William and Christina both died at "The Knoll",William in 1933 and Christina in 1943.

I am glad to be able to inform you that I am going as well as can be expected. The doctor is very dear and Mr Cameron is very kind.-the man in attendance. They had put me under chloroform to get the good set-it is a compound fracture of the ankle. The doctor at one time thought it necessary to amputate the foot-but I would not consent-rather that I would suffer pain than lose m poor foot, but it is quite necessary that you should know that the pain is beyond endurance. The Dr is often taking off the splints and casing it in plaster of paris and he said he did not expect it to be looking so well.It has been in splints since Saturday afternoon. It will not be necessary for you to come in.I shall write according as I get along. Let Charlie go on with the shed as if I was there.I do not care if I ever see that mare again. With fondest love to my dear wife and all the children. It was a sad ending, we were bidding to get home early. I am in great pain.I must close. Your loving husband John Woods"
