Deceased was born in county Longford, Ireland, in the year 1840. Twenty-four years later he arrived in Sydney and his first employment in this country was as a dairy farming hand at Kiama. In those days there were no awards governing hours and pay and he worked 18 hours a day for the princely sum of 15/ per week. After twelve months at Kiama he sought a change of employment and applied for admission and was accepted in the mounted police,he gave about ten years service and during that period was stationed at Pilliga, Deniliquin, Wilcannia, Barradean and Menindie, respectively. He would relate many interesting and exciting experience's encountered in the force and he has to his credit the distinction of having captured, with the aid of a black tracker, three armed bush rangers near Milparinka. On his retirement from the force he had attained the rank of sergeant. It was now that he heard the call of the land, and in 1876 he selected "Springfield," at Gum Flat, where he remained until the time of his death.

In carving a home in what then was primeval bush, Mr. and Mrs. Makim had all the early pioneering difficulties to contend with. The railway extended only us far as Singleton and transport in the days before motor cars, was an arduous proposition. The fact, however, that they were able to carry on and remain on the property for over half a century, speaks much for their perseverance and the faith they held in the district.

Whilst successfully working his selection, the late Mr. Makim found time to take his share of the responsibilities of public matters. He was one of the provisional councillors of Bannockburn Shire and subsequently served on the council for two terms.

The family traditions in this respect have since and are still being upheld. One son, Cr. G. S. Makim, is at present a member of the same shire, and other son, Mr. R. W. Mnkin, is a member of Warialda P.P. Board, and yet another, recently deceased at Manly, was for many years interested in local government. Deceased was also a committeeman of the P and A. Association for several years, and in the early days was a large exhibitor of cattle at the annual show. As a Justice of the Peace, too, he for many years gave service to the community. The late Mr. Makim . is survived bv a family of four sons and two daughters, all of whom are well-known in the north-west. The sons are Messrs. John Makiin, of "Hibernia" Warialda; Cr. George S. Makim, "Currawarra," Gum Flat; R. W. Makim,Pallamallawa, and Fred W. Makim, of "Springfield," Gum Flat. The daughters are Mrs D Wilson, Garah, and Mrs. R.D. Woods, Parramatta.

The interment took place yesterday at the Gum Flat cemetery.

(The black tracker who alway accompanied John was known as Spider, and his motto was " One eye open all the time boss " )

John married Margaret WOODS on 17 Oct 1872 in Hay, New South Wales, Australia. Margaret (daughter of John WOODS, ,Tenant farmer , of Barnane, Templemore,Ireland and Margaret"Peggy" MIDDLETON) was born on 28 Aug 1848 in Templemore, Tipperary , Ireland; died on 10 Apr 1927 in Springfield , Gum Flat .NSW, Australia; was buried on 11 Apr 1927 in Gum Flat, New South Wales, Australia. Notes:

Margaret emigrated to Australia in 1872 to marry her fiance John .

After much research,I have come to the conclusion Margaret arrived in Melbourne, not Sydney.

There are no records located to prove that she arrived in Sydney , but there is a record of a 23 years Irish lass named Margaret Woods, a farm servant, arriving in Melbourne,on the Colonial Empire ,on the 24th September 1872 .(The Colonial Empire departed Plymouth, UK, on the 22 June 1872)

This record aligns with the family spoken history that after arriving she was accompanied by a colleague of Johns on the 3 week journey in order to be married in Hay NSW on 17th October 1872 . Hay is approx 400 km North of Melbourne by road

    Notes:

William was brought up in the household of Gilbert Cory with his step brothers and step sisters and it was here that the foundation was laid for the wonderful Christian life that William was to lead .As a youth he moved to the Gostwych property of Edward Cory at Uralla, where he learnt the skills of sheep property management .At the age of 20 years he was managing "Paradise Creek" Station near Inverell,NSW ,for the Dangar Brothers.

Shortly after his marriage to Christina Ferguson on the 8th of September 1881, William was offered the position of Manager of " Mooki Springs" Station near Quirindi but he declined the offer. Later he held a similar position on "Newstead" Station near Inverell. One day he found a roll of notes to the value of one hundred pounds . He promptly returned them to a Mr. Maclean who had lost them and who was most grateful to have them returned. Mr. Maclean offered William a partnership in a store at Tingha where tin mining was booming.Wiliiam accepted the offer of the partnership but with just a verbal agreement. Later when the business failed William lost his investment. He then bought "Pine Lodge " an orchard farm at Beaulieu, Gum Flat near Inverell,NSW.

"Pine Lodge" was sold about 1908 and the family moved to a grazing property called "Mount View" Tarban in the Tenterfield district . During World War 1 and after selling "Mount View" in 1916 residence was taken up for a short time at Scone. The family returned to the Tenterfield area when William purchased "Terrica " Sandy Flat. This was a small farm of about 156 acres .

"Terrica" was sold to Frank Petrie in 1933 for 420 pounds, the low price being attributed to the Depression.

William & Christina eventually moved to "The Knoll" Sunnyside and made their home with their daughter Mabs and her husband William Waugh . William and Christina both died at "The Knoll",William in 1933 and Christina in 1943.

  1. 8.  John MAKIM, ,of Cloone, County Leitrim, Ireland was born in 1811 in Ireland; died on 5 Jan 1881 in Lurgan, Parish of Cloone, County Leitrim, Ireland.

    Notes:

    (Research):
The Makim name is recorded in the 1674 Hearth Money Rolls for Staffordshire ,U.K and it is quite possible a branch of this family was transplanted by the English landlords to Tipperary in Ireland ,to run their farms in that area. This will require additional research to ascertain a link,if any.

(Record keepers and census takers assumed that tenant farmers ,labourers and servants were all illiterate, which many were in fact, and would use the phonetic spelling i.e they wrote the name as it sounded, resulting in much confusion in later times when researching family history) Some possible variations are Makem, Macom, Macoom, Meakom

Makemie, McKemey was a name not uncommon in the Fanad area of Northern Ireland in the 17th and 18th century ,and McKim,McKimm was of the Ramelton area.

John married Ellen Jane SCANLON. Ellen was born in 1815 in Ireland; died on 17 Jul 1879 in Lurgan, Parish of Cloone, County Leitrim, Ireland. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Ellen Jane SCANLON was born in 1815 in Ireland; died on 17 Jul 1879 in Lurgan, Parish of Cloone, County Leitrim, Ireland.

    Notes:

    Married:
A young 24 year old by the name of William John Makim(surname spelt as Macken in the Dublin Gazette of the time) was murdered on the 2nd of April 1878 ,when the carriage carrying William Sydney Clements ,the hated 3rd Lord of Leitrim, was attacked by several of his tenants, about three miles from Milford,Donegal. Whether this lad is a nephew of John and Jane is not certain, although his age would suggest he could be.His widowed mother, Sarah Makim,of Lough Rynn ,was granted seven hundred pounds compensation for his death by the Donegal Grand Jury.

Killing of the Earl of Leitrim

In the decades before land reform in Ireland the Leitrim Estate was one of the largest in County Donegal, and included large swathes of land in the West of Ireland as well as Donegal, where the family ran their affairs from their seat at Manor Vaughan outside Carrigart.

The Estate leased 12,176 acres in Fanad, around half the area of the parish, from Trinity College, Dublin, along with a further 42,669 acres around Milford. This was the greater part of their Estate, as their land in Galway, Leitrim and Kildare came to 40,655 acres in total. William Sydney Clements, who held the title of 3rd Earl of Leitrim from 1854 to 1878, was a quick-tempered man who was forever falling out with his tenants. Constant criticism from liberal newspapers had little effect on Leitrim's behaviour, but the way in which he met his end still caused shock and outrage.

Early on the Tuesday morning of the 2nd April 1878, he was on his way to Letterkenny from Manor Vaughan when he, his driver Charles Buchanan and John Makim his clerk were set upon at Woodquarter, on the western shore of Mulroy Bay. All three lost their lives. Although no-one was ever convicted of his murder, there is little doubt that he was killed by three of his tenants from Fanad, Neil Shiels of Doaghmore, Michael McElwee of Ballywhoriskey, and Michael Heraghty of Tullyconnell. Shiels and Heraghty were Fenians and McIlwee was a member of the secret society known as the Ribbonmen.
Heraghty was the only one of the three arrested and charged with the murder, but 6 other men were charged with him: his brother Patrick, the three brothers Anthony, Bernard and Thomas McGrenaghan of Gortnatraw North, and their first cousins Anthony and Michael McGrenaghan from the same townland. Circumstantial evidence - a gun butt and a piece of paper used to wrap lead - linking Michael Heraghty and the McGrenaghans respectively to the murder was found at the crime scene.
It is quite possible that the evidence was strong enough to convict Heraghty but he died of typhus while in custody in Lifford Jail. His funeral cortege was met by a crowd of 3,000 when it approached the Fanad peninsula. The others were never brought to trial and released in February 1879.

Shiels lived the remainder of his life in Fanad until his death in 1924, living long enough not only to see the end of landlordism but an Irish Free State.

  5. 12.  William Thomas HINGSTON, ,Snr was born in 1827 in Gloucestershire, England; died before 1876.

    Notes:

Details of William Thomas Hingston Snr's birth and death have not yet been established. Until recently , his descendants had accepted that William had been killed by a fall from a horse ,shortly after his only son (William) was born in 1856, but there is no evidence to support this , nor can a death certificate be located to date,so William Snr remains somewhat of a mystery.(Still, the "fall from a horse" story had to originate somewhere. His death has been taken fom Charlotte's second marriage certificate, to Gilbert Cory, which states that Charlotte was a widow.)

When he actually came to Australia and on what ship is also not known at this stage.

William Thomas Hingston was obviously educated and his ability to read and write was a great advantage,as he travelled to Australia as a free man to enter the employ of Mr Gilbert Cory of Vacy as his Book Keeper and it was during that time that he apparently met his future wife,Charlotte Haines, the Cory family Governess.

(Gilbert Cory's wife had died in 1854 shortly after the birth of their youngest child. Whether Charlotte was already employed as Governess prior to 1854 is not known)

(Research):William Thomas Hingston's widow, Charlotte , apparently entered into a relationship with her employer,Gilbert Cory,a widower with ten children, and had a further nine children by him ,between 1859 and 1873,their marriage being recorded as taking place in 1876 ,in Maitland,NSW,some three years after their youngest child was born, and it is from this record that it is definitely established that Charlotte was a widow, but for how long is not recorded.

"The Morton Bay Courier" of 9th March 1861,reported the death of one William Hingston in the vicinity of Little Ipswich (Ipswich),whilst holding the reins of his horse to prevent it moving backwards when crossing the local One Mile Bridge, collapsed and fell backwards .He was moved to the Queensland Hotel, but could not be revived ,and died thirty minutes later. The coroners report stated that he had suffered from disease of the liver, but the cause of death was in fact due to the intense heat of the day. (There is no evidence that this is in fact William Thomas Hingston.)

The newspaper article reads-"Tuesday last, on the body of William Hingston, who had died suddenly the previous day from the excessive heat of the weather. It appeared the evidence given at the inquest that the deceased was sent by Mr.Germain, a tanner, early in the morning to get some bark, so that he might be back before the heat of the day came on. After getting the load, he was on his way home, and after crossing the bridge the deceased whilst holding the reins, to prevent the horse backing down the hill, fell backwards and called his son to put on his hat. His son did so, threw a shirt over him and went for assistance. Mr.Germain and two men arrived immediately afterwards and finding him, apparently dying, threw some cold water in his face, and took him to the Queensland Hotel, where he expired about half an hour afterwards. Deceased had been ailing some time from disease of the liver, and from the evidence of Dr.Rowlands the cause of death was the excessive heat of the day."

In Grevilles 1872 Post Office Directory for Vacy, Charlotte is listed as Mrs Charlotte Kingston ,her address is Vacy ,there is no entry for a William Thomas Hingston/Kingston. In the 1867 Bailliere's Official NSW Post Office Directory ("containing the names ,residences and occupations of the inhabitants of the Post towns of the colony") Catherine is listed as KINGSTON Catherine - of Vacy. There is no listing for William ,under Hingston, in the 500 page directory, so it is assumed he was deceased by this time, although there is an entry for a William Kingston, shopkeeper,of Singleton.

William married Charlotte Elizabeth HAINES on 28 Feb 1855 in Benbullan, via Hartley, NSW.Australia. Charlotte (daughter of William HAINES, ,Inn Keeper,of Cheltenham , Gloucestershire, England. and Charlotte ASHWEEK) was born on 15 Sep 1833 in Cheltenham Spa, Gloucestershire, England.; was christened on 9 Oct 1833 in St Mary, Cheltenham Spa, Gloucestershire, England.; died on 16 Apr 1924 in Ashtonleigh, Vacy, NSW, Australia; was buried on 17 Apr 1924 in St Pauls, Paterson, New South Wales, Australia. Notes:

Charlotte ,an Innkeepers daughter, arrived in Australia on board the "Bussorah Merchant" as an assisted passenger ,arriving on the 15th March 1853. The ships log states her age as 18 and her occupation was recorded as "shopwoman".

She may have met her 1st husband William Thomas Hingston whilst she was Governess to the children of Gilbert Cory of Vacy in the Hunter Valley, and he was Book Keeper.

Charlotte later married Gilbert Cory after her husband William and Gilbert's wife Jeanette Rens died. She and Gilbert had a total of nine children ,Gilbert also had ten children by his first marriage.

(Research):I have not located a marriage certificate for William Haines and Charlotte Ashwick as yet , but there is a marriage registered to a William Haines and Charlotte Ashweek (11 Aug 1823 - Southwark, Middlesex.)
